Frequently Asked Questions

What is Reiki?

Reiki is an ancient Japanese healing technique that dates back 2,500 years. Very similar to acupuncture, it uses the energy of life that runs through your body and channels it to where it will be most beneficial. Unlike acupuncture though, no needles or pressure are needed during a Reiki session. Oftentimes, physical touch is not even needed!

Reiki energy can be used to alleviate headaches, lower back pain, digestive issues, fibromyalgia, insomnia… the list goes on and on!

Reiki has also been used to help people who struggle with anxiety, depression, and other emotional or mental imbalances.

Reiki also helps to balance and align chakras (energy centers) and meridians, repairs rips and tears in your aura, awaken and enhance intuitive/psychic abilities, and helps to strengthen your energy field.

The most common form of Reiki practiced throughout the world today, also known as Usui Reiki, was created by Dr. Mikao Usui in the early 20th century. Mikao Usui founded his first Reiki clinic and school in Tokyo in 1922 and the rest is history!

It’s used as a complementary or alternative health approach. Reiki does not directly cure diseases or illnesses. Instead, it’s used as a way to manage symptoms and improve general well-being (physically, mentally, and emotionally).

What are chakras? How do they affect my health?

In Ayurveda, the ancient healing medicine of India (and the oldest medicine known to mankind), we all consist of chakras. Chakras are the energy centers located in and around the body. We have seven “main” chakras, but there are actually so many more! Chakra is a Sanskrit word that means "wheel," but chakras are so much more than spinning wheels of energy and light. Each chakra is associated with a color, a location in the body, a mood, and an area of your life that it governs. The chakras are also three-dimensional, like funnels, and chakras two through six have both a front and back aspect to them.

How does this affect your health? Well, chakras become blocked when we have unresolved trauma or unprocessed emotions lodged in them. If something bad happens to us, our chakras can get stuck holding onto that experience until we release it. Chakras can get blocked in two different ways. They can be overactive (excessive), which means that they have too much energy running through them. Or, they can be deficient, which means they are undercharged and don't have enough energy running through them. Both are considered blockages. If the emotional or mental blockage stays in your energy field long enough, it can manifest as a physical symptom or issue. Like when you overthink and give yourself a headache — that actually comes from a third eye chakra blockage.

When the chakras are functioning well, they allow us to be fluid and live in the moment, without running old programs (emotions, behaviors, etc.) from the past. This creates both relaxation and power in us. We are in the moment, feeling open and curious without anxiety, and we are also able to act decisively with power when we need to.

It pays to clear up your chakras with Reiki and other forms of holistic healing! When we clear and balance our chakras, we release old emotional and physical wounds as well as stuck energy, which allows us to be fully present in the moment, thereby alleviating anxiety and depression.

What can I expect to feel with a Reiki session?

Honestly, try to go in with no expectations. Reiki is such an individual, unique experience that it truly depends on the person and their energy. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
A few commonly experienced things during the session are: a warm tingly feeling, cool bursts, pressure moving around and then dissipating, feeling like you’re temporarily out of your body, seeing swirly colors in your mind, random muscle spasms or twitches, and crying or other emotions being released. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
ALL of these things are normal! Because it’s how YOUR body needs to release the stored energy and trauma. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
After your session, I will write down on my notepad what chakras we worked on and any recommendations I have for you to maintain this high vibrational state of being that you’re in. This will be your “homework” so you can feel empowered to work on things till your next session. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Almost always, I will recommend a salt bath. Salt baths are so amazing for cleansing and maintaining a peaceful and strong aura and energetic field. Other recommendations will depend on the chakras and your habits.

Do I need to do anything to prepare for a Reiki session?

Not at all! If it is your first session with me, then I will have you fill out some paperwork. This is so I have an idea of what you’ve been experiencing lately— physically, mentally, and emotionally. When we are out of energetic alignment, the healing vibrations of Reiki work to release blocked energies and gently guide you back into a state of harmony and this can affect your body, mind, and emotions. So the more information I have from you about those things, the better. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
During your session, you will stay fully clothed and lay face up on a massage table. I will hover my hands a few inches over your body to move the energy. Very rarely, if ever, will I actually need to touch your physical body. There will be Solfeggio music playing in the background because it strengthens the effect of the Reiki. I find a combination of sound and energy healing is the perfect duo to help transform and provide deep healing. Sound healing is most powerful when paired with intention (frequency + intention = healing) so there will always be high vibration music playing in the background. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
But honestly, that’s all there is to do! Just lay there, relax, and let the Reiki do its thing. ⠀⠀

Where does all the ‘bad’ energy go? Do you end up absorbing it?

Thankfully, no! (Although it’s possible if I’m not careful with my techniques. I appreciate the concern!)⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
So, The Law of Conservation of Energy states that "energy can neither be created nor destroyed; energy can only be transferred or changed from one form to another." (Thank you, Einstein.) This also applies to Reiki because Reiki is energy! How does it do this? Reiki transmutes negative energy into positive energy. To transmute is "to alter in form, appearance or nature, especially to change something to a higher form." So the “bad energy” is literally transformed into “good energy!” ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Therefore, by transforming the negative thoughts and feelings, you can see how Reiki energy provides a platform for our healing. This is why I’m so passionate about it. It’s natural, easy, and effective! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Today, more than ever, we are learning about how disease can be rooted in our mental, emotional, and spiritual states. This is why, most commonly, Reiki is used to ease pain, anxiety, fatigue, and depression, but since at its core is the conviction that the body in its natural state can heal any ailment, the applications (theoretically) are endless. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Long story short, the "bad" energy doesn't "go" anywhere, it is transformed into "good" energy.

Can Reiki help kids?

YES! People often believe that Reiki is only for adults, which isn’t true. Reiki can be received by almost every living thing, from toddlers to elders, plants to animals. Receiving Reiki at a young age can help promote a healthy way of living throughout a child’s life.

The scientific explanation of Reiki is that everything is made up of the same energy, from your dishwasher to your thoughts. When I tap into Reiki, this energy is then transferred to the child, and then used wherever it is needed. The body knows what to do with the energy, and requires no input by me, I am just the channel or conduit. And the best part is that kids don't need very much! For most babies or kids (up through the age of 12), a 15- or 20-minute session is enough. Although I have no kids of my own, I have been giving Reiki to my sister’s kids about once a month for the past year or two. They love it and now have learned to ask for it when they’re not feeling well. Even my 5-year-old nephew asks for it when he has an upset stomach.

Reiki is also renowned for its calming and relaxing effect and can be perfect for children struggling with tantrums and mood swings. It is also beneficial for children with ADD or ADHD and can help minimize hyperactivity and excitability. Due to its calming effect, it also can be a great way to help children who struggle to sleep.

Reiki can also be awesome for children who are suffering from social anxiety and a lack of confidence. It can help pacify any negative thoughts and emotions, such as low self-esteem, anger, and fear. Many adults struggle to deal with these emotions and often ignore their problems. By helping children cope with these negative thoughts at a young age, it can reduce the chances of depression and anxiety as adults, and improve their way of life when they are older. Win-win!

Are you a Psychic?

No, but I’m very intuitive. Sometimes when I’m tapped into the Reiki flow of energy, I will receive “messages” from a Higher Power who wants me to pass them on to you. Do not be alarmed when this happens! It’s a magical and lovely thing.
